Dean had been gone for a couple days on a supply run, having decided they were running low on a few essentials. Most could have been gotten locally, but a few things were a little more rare so he'd had to head out of town. During that time a possible case had popped up and Sam decided to take it. It looked small. Possibly a demon possession or something small like that. Nothing he hadn't handled alone before.

He'd drove into the town and stopped at the first motel he came across, pulling into the front before getting out and heading inside. He booked a room before asking about the crimes that had been committed before heading back out to check things out. He did a few drive arounds, just surveying the town before going back to his room and deciding to change.

It was easy enough for Lucifer to have a demon or two stir up trouble in a town, then planting the information where Sam would find it. Then all there was to do was wait for him to clue in and arrive before picking one of the two choices of motel.

There was then patiently waiting for Sam to do his initial investigations before settling in his room. Once Sam was in, he wastes no time sound-proofing the room and sealing it off from interruptions.

"Sam. Imagine my non-surprise when I learned you were the one to set the Darkness free." He'll just be leaning against the wall by the door with his arms folded over his chest. As you do.

As soon as he'd heard that voice he spun around, gun coming out of the back of his pants and pointing straight at Lucifer's head, even if he knew it was completely futile. "This isn't real." He said, the barest sound of hope in his voice. Because Lucifer couldn't be free. This had to be some sort of nightmare.

Even so, he quickly put as much space between himself and Lucifer that he could, moving to the far side of the room. His eyes moved to the door, but there was no way he'd make it there before Lucifer stopped him.

"No, Sam, I'm very real. She's not the only one you set free. Her escape damaged the Cage enough for me to get out. So once again, I have you to thank for being out in the world once again." He'll just give Sam a moment to absorb that and the truth of what he's said, ignoring the gun since it was hardly going to do anything remotely permanent.

He lowered the gun, knowing just how absolutely pointless it was as he made a pained sound. So once again, everything was his fault. It always was. He swallowed, shaking his head. "You won't get me to say yes to you again. No matter what you do or say." He said, his jaw clenched. He was determined. He would die before accepting that fate again.

Lucifer rolls his eyes and surveys the room. "Don't be dramatic. Who do you think is responsible for you standing here in this room? Hint: it's me. I told the demons in town to stir up trouble and made sure you'd find out about it. The only part I didn't control was the exact room or motel you'd choose."

"And? What do you want, Lucifer? Because I'm not going to help you. Not after everything you put me though." He said, dropping the gun onto the bed next to where he stood, facing the archangel and waiting for whatever was coming next. He doubted any of it could be good, that was certain.

Lucifer makes a faint sound if disapproval, making the gun disappear in an instant before it even has the chance to hit the bed. "Like I said, stop being dramatic. Maybe I wanted to see me favorite Winchester."

Then he looks slightly thoughtful. "Even if it's not by much. You're kind of annoying. All wrapped up in self-righteousness and all that malarkey. Honestly, sometimes I wonder if you even listen to yourself."

That really shouldn't have felt as insulting to him as it had. He scoffed, frowning, his mouth opening to argue before closing again. He blinked and then cleared his throat. Why was he upset by what Lucifer had said? "Says the guy who threw a temper tantrum when he didn't get his way."

"Sticks and stones and glass houses, Sam. Your temper isn't anything to be proud of either," Lucifer points out, sensing a drop of the proverbial blood in the water.

He just shrugged a shoulder, trying to play it off as nothing. "You're the one who started it. You want to point out my flaws, I can play too." He moved away from the wall, turning a bit, moving closer towards the door and the window at the front of the room.

"You've changed, Sam. Whatever happened to you doing whatever was needed to save the world, no matter what it cost you or Dean? Hmm? Where did that Sam go? I don't know if you've noticed, but he's been replaced with one who's more concerned with keeping himself and his brother safe and the world can go hang." Lucifer watches Sam closely to see how his words lands.

His fists clench at the words, jaw going tight with anger because yes, those words struck a chord. "You don't know anything about us. You would destroy the world just because daddy put you in time out. Because you were selfish and hateful."

"Temper, temper," Lucifer chides. "I have nothing against the fauna and flora. Just the humans ruining everything. Has anyone told you that it took Father and archangels to get the Darkness put away? And right here in front of you is an archangel who could use the extra juice provided by being in the right vessel to avoid things going in the pot when facing her."

He laughed, shaking his head. "What, so you'd stop her after taking me as a vessel? And then what? Restart the apocalypse yourself? Yeah, I don't think so. I'm not stupid, Lucifer and I am not going to say yes." He finally just strode to the door, hand grasping the door knob firmly.

"Michael's the one who wanted the Apocalypse. Not me," Lucifer points out. Then he watches Sam try and fail to open the door. "Really? You didn't think that I would seal the room off? You're not going anywhere unless I allow it. You might want to make yourself comfortable."

He let go of the door, moving to the table and sitting down. He moved his hands out of sight, wondering if he could cut himself and make a banishing sigil before Lucifer caught on. "And what did you want? You had no problem sending out the horsemen and letting god only knows how many people die in your grudge match. I don't want to be your vessel, Lucifer."

"You know perfectly well that the majority of humans could drop dead in an instant and I wouldn't care beyond maybe being a little annoyed about them smelling up the place," he points out. "I needed to make my opening moves against Michael and if I cracked a few heads, so be it."

He wouldn't recommend trying to banish him. Not if Sam didn't want demons.

Not that he knew about the demons. He winced a bit when he sliced his hand open, unable to see what he was drawing on the underside of the table properly. "I still won't say yes. I can't take that again."

Lucifer looks at Sam expressionlessly for a moment before sighing and snapping away the table. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice you trying to get rid of me? I'm not going anywhere, Sam."

"You're not going anywhere and I'm not saying yes so I guess we're just going to sit around until Dean figures out where I am and finds out how to get me out of here." He said, grabbing a towel and wrapping his bleeding hand with a scowl.

"He could use explosives on the door and not get anywhere," Lucifer says, completely unconcerned about Dean.

"Dean will find a way." He said quietly, leaning back in his chair. "Do you think keeping me here will eventually convince me to say yes? What do you think you're going to get out of this?"

"Are you really going to try to tell me that you haven't missed me, even a little bit?" Lucifer inquires with raised eyebrows. "Yes, yes, you think I'm a terrible person, but still. That hole you have that hadn't been filled until we got together and is back to being empty? You've noticed it, haven't you?"

His brow furrowed at the question, staring at him. "Why would I miss the being who tortured me? Who tried to kill my brother in my body? Who wanted to destroy everything I love?" No, he wouldn't admit it, even if it were true. He'd felt it ever since his soul had been put back in his body.

"Maybe a little something to do with us being two halves of the same whole," Lucifer points out. "Sure, I'm the better half, but still. Water under the bridge, Sammy."
